
| Professor David Holgate is Chairperson of the AIMS South Africa Council and holder of the UWC–AIMS Research Chair in Mathematics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), where he also serves as Deputy Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He began his academic career at the University of Cape Town, completing a BSc (Hons) in Actuarial Science followed by an MSc and PhD in Mathematics. After postdoctoral studies in Germany and Italy, he spent fourteen years at Stellenbosch University before joining UWC in 2012. At UWC, he has served as Head of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics before taking on faculty leadership as Deputy Dean. He holds a B2-rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF) for his research in Topology and Category Theory. Professor Holgate is deeply committed to mathematics education and academic service in South Africa. He has received national awards for excellence in teaching and believes that the mathematical sciences play a vital role in nation-building and in addressing social inequality. His wider academic service includes serving as Associate Editor of Quaestiones Mathematicae, founding member of the National Graduate Academy for Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (NGA-MaSS), and previous service on the Council of the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS) and the Board of the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF). Outside academia, he values time with his family and draws inspiration from the fynbos, mountains, and oceans of the Western Cape. |
