
Prof. Sibusiso Moyo is an accomplished academic and research strategist, currently serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies at Stellenbosch University, a role she assumed on 1 September 2022. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Natal, Durban, and a Master’s in Tertiary Education Management (with distinction) from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
Before joining Stellenbosch University, Prof. Moyo held several senior roles at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Associate Director, Director for Research and Postgraduate Support, and ultimately Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement (RIE). In that capacity, she led a diverse portfolio that included research policy, technology transfer, international partnerships, postgraduate support, cooperative education, alumni relations, and engagement initiatives.
Prof. Moyo has published extensively in international journals, presented at numerous academic conferences, and continues to supervise Master’s and PhD students. She held an NRF Y-rating from 2005 to 2009 and remains active in research, particularly in the application of group-theoretic techniques to nonlinear phenomena in the mathematical and physical sciences. Her interests also include strategic research that informs higher education policy and innovation frameworks.
In addition to her academic leadership, Prof. Moyo is committed to promoting entrepreneurship and innovation among students. At DUT, she played a key role in establishing the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and developing mentoring programmes for student entrepreneurs, supporting a vision of graduates as job creators.
She is also a passionate advocate for mathematics education, youth engagement, and the mentorship of young women in STEM fields. Her contributions to institutional transformation, research excellence, and inclusive development are well aligned with the goals of the AIMS Council, to which she brings significant strategic insight. She joined the council in 2024.
