From 6 to 16 July 2025, the AIMSSEC family marked a historic milestone. The first half of our course was integrated into a national event dedicated to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning mathematics, known as the Mega Maths Festival.
Ninety-two teachers, all from rural communities across four provinces, travelled to the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The university, together with the Department of Higher Education and Training and AIMS South Africa, opened its doors to host this remarkable gathering. For our teachers, it was more than a course—it was a chance to sit side by side with the broader mathematics and mathematical sciences community, to listen, to share, and to feel part of something bigger than themselves.
The event was directly tied to the Mathematical Skills and Competencies for Employment course, providing teachers with opportunities to attend workshops, hear inspiring talks, share their voices, and connect with leaders in the field. Many described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, an opportunity that will stay with them long after the course has ended.
On 12 July, at the crack of dawn, we left UWC and made our way to Stellenbosch High School. Despite the tiredness of long days behind us, the spirit of learning carried us forward. The commitment to strengthening mathematics teaching in secondary schools was evident in every discussion, every problem solved, and every shared moment of reflection.
These ten days were more than just a course; they were history in the making. Together, we showed what is possible when passion, partnership, commitment and purpose come together in the service of education. We salute all our rural teachers who consistently show up, regardless of the circumstances.
