AIMS Partners with Wimmy to Launch Graduate Programme in Applied Data Science

AIMS South Africa is delighted to announce a new partnership with Wimmy to pioneer a graduate programme in applied data science for outstanding AIMS graduates. In January 2026, Wimmy will welcome three junior data scientists from the Muizenberg centre, each holding a Master’s degree in mathematical sciences along with additional qualifications in statistics, mathematics, or computer science.

Reflecting on the partnership, Prof Wim Delva shared: “When AIMS’s director, Prof Karin-Therese Howell, raised the idea of a partnership between AIMS and Wimmy, our interest was piqued. Our connection with AIMS goes back 20 years. In 2005, as a 6th-year medical student, I was welcomed with open arms to do a postgraduate course on mathematical modelling of infectious diseases at AIMS. A few years later, I joined the faculty of the Meaningful Modelling of Infectious Diseases course, which was hosted by AIMS for many years. And Emanuel Dominic, one of the longest serving Wimmians, is an AIMS alumnus.”

AIMS is grateful to the National Skills Fund for supporting a broader in-house Industry Immersion Programme, developed by Dr Jacques Rabie, which enables AIMS to host the Wimmy graduate data scientists during the programme period.

Through this partnership, AIMS and Wimmy are joining forces to help exceptional young mathematicians transition from the world of theorems and formulas to real-world datasets and the complex challenges faced by healthcare organisations. As Prof Delva notes: “Mathematicians are innately primed to be great problem-solvers. We believe that this graduate programme will expand and deepen our value as trusted allies and thought partners to our clients. If you think a classically trained mathematician is special, try one who has been empowered by data science, AI, and real-world management consulting.”
