On 24 October 2025, Dr Rejoyce Gavhi-Molefe, Manager of the AIMS South Africa House of Science, was elected Vice-President for the Southern Africa Region of the African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA).

The AWMA held the inaugural meeting of its new Executive Board for the 2025–2029 term on September 29, 2025, marking a new chapter in strengthening women’s participation in mathematics across Africa. Outgoing President Prof. Marie Françoise Ouedraogo congratulated the incoming team and encouraged them to build on the association’s achievements while addressing persistent gender disparities in STEM.
Dr Gavhi-Molefe succeeds Prof. Sibusiso Moyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies at Stellenbosch University. In her new role, she will lead and coordinate AWMA activities in the Southern African region, strengthen networks among women mathematicians, and promote opportunities for young girls and women to pursue careers in mathematics.
“I am honoured and delighted to lead and drive AWMA’s efforts in the Southern African region. While progress has been made over the past decade, much remains to be done to advance gender equity in the mathematical sciences and achieve genuine inclusion and transformation in line with the continental and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through this role, I hope to bring my track record, sustained commitment, and foster collaboration with fellow Board members and continue to pave the way forward to the next generation of African women in mathematics. Furthermore, I will endeavour in this leadership role to advance and enhance the visibility of African women in mathematics, both regionally and globally,” said Dr Gavhi-Molefe
At AIMS South Africa, this vision closely aligns with the institute’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equity, inclusion, and leadership in STEM academia and research.
