Strengthening Community Through Mathematics: Our Growing Partnership with Crestway High School

Our work with Crestway High School in Steenberg-Retreat has been built steadily and intentionally over several years. What began as a series of small engagements has evolved into a meaningful partnership grounded in trust, shared purpose, and a commitment to expanding opportunities for young people. Throughout this time, we have collaborated closely with Crestway learners on a variety of projects, always guided by the belief that mathematics can open new pathways when learners feel supported and inspired.

Our outreach has also extended into the neighbouring primary schools whose learners eventually transition into Crestway High. These schools have actively participated in several of the campaigns, workshops, and learning programmes held at AIMS. Over the years, we’ve come to know the teachers, learners, and school environments well. Their enthusiasm and willingness to innovate continue to energise and shape our work.

On 22 October 2025, this partnership reached a significant milestone. We hosted a focused workshop, seeded by Prof. Jonathan Jansen and delivered by Dr Corvell Cranfield, who has consistently delivered training to the primary schools that form Crestway’s feeder system. Their combined leadership reflects a model we deeply value: bringing together professionals and academics who are embedded in the same school communities where we work, ensuring that expertise is both grounded and relevant.

This effort is not only about workshops and training sessions—it is also about investing in spaces where teachers and learners can thrive. For the two primary schools we have been supporting, we marked their ongoing development by donating key resources to enhance their mathematics hubs. These resources are designed to equip both learners and teachers, while also creating an environment that attracts teachers from other schools seeking professional learning opportunities.

Our relationship with Crestway High and its surrounding primary schools continues to grow, shaped by the shared vision of strengthening mathematics education in ways that are community-centred, sustainable, and transformative. With partners like Professor Jansen, Dr Cranfield, and the dedicated teachers across the Steenberg-Retreat area, we are building something that extends far beyond a single workshop, something that has the potential to shift learning experiences for years to come.
