A group of eleven Google DeepMind scholars from AIMS South Africa took part as mentors in the recent AI Hackathon held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 24-25 September.
The hackathon formed part of the G20 series of events in South Africa and was organised by Google DeepMind in collaboration with the Google Developer Group Cape Town. The event brought together innovators and developers to tackle real-world challenges through artificial intelligence, with a strong AIMS presence among the mentors guiding participating teams.
The mentors included nine graduates from the 2024–2025 AI for Science intake and two current students from the 2025 January intake: Ahmed Turkman, Astride Melvin Fokam Ninyim, Asim Osman, Ayman Saeed, Benedict Ejelonu, Isaac Henri Joël Houngue, Mark Bergh, Mushtaha El-amin, Omer Kamal Ali Ebead, Similoluwa Okunowo, and Astride Melvin Fokam Ninyim.
Their participation reflects the continued impact of AIMS-trained AI scientists across Africa, demonstrating leadership and community engagement in advancing artificial intelligence for social good.
