From 6 to 12 July 2025, AIMSSEC welcomed 10 learners from grades 11 and 12, representing Crestway, Lavender Hill, Masibambane, and Intlanganiso Secondary Schools, for a unique opportunity to experience university life firsthand.
During the week, learners stayed with the AIMSSEC team and teachers at the University of the Western Cape’s student hostel, shared meals with staff, and fully immersed themselves in campus life. Thanks to the kindness of a university staff member, who escorted the learners to various activities at the sports centre, they were able to explore more of university life firsthand — even rising at 5 a.m. for a morning swim in the heated pool! The learners were spoiled by attending a gala evening and handing over gifts to VIPs.
Academically, learners actively participated in activities, assisting teachers with computational thinking exercises and attending FET lessons to deepen their understanding of mathematics. This hands-on experience offered them insight into both the academic and social aspects of university life, fostering confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging. By supporting teachers and engaging in lessons, they strengthened their own skills while making meaningful contributions to the learning of others.
At AIMSSEC, we work hard to change the narrative of township learners, showing that they are capable of participating in university and achieving great things when given the opportunity. Programs like this highlight the importance of early exposure to higher education, inspiring learners from marginalised communities and opening doors to future academic opportunities.
