Mastercard Foundation: Reflecting, Planning, and Connecting

AIMS Network Holds Annual Meeting in Ghana

Accra, Ghana – May 20–23, 2025

Noluthando Sithole, an intern with the House of Science Communication at AIMS South Africa, recently represented the centre at the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at AIMS’s Annual Reflection and Planning Meeting held in Accra, Ghana. Over four impactful days, representatives from AIMS centres across Africa came together to reflect on the network’s progress, share innovative practices, and strategize for the future.

Hosted at the Best Western Plus Accra Beach Hotel, the meeting offered not only a space for productive dialogue but also an opportunity to build deeper relationships across the AIMS network.

The meeting began with a powerful session focused on gender inclusion within the scientific community and within AIMS itself. The session explored practical strategies to strengthen gender representation across leadership, teaching, and student cohorts.

Central to the meeting were sessions focused on aligning the network’s strategic direction. Representatives reflected on the unique approaches taken by each AIMS centre, examining how local innovations contribute to the organization’s broader mission. Attendees collaborated on refining an action plan aimed at strengthening AIMS’ impact and expanding access to quality education in mathematical sciences across the continent.

After concluding the formal sessions, we had the opportunity to visit the AIMS Ghana centre, where we were warmly welcomed by students, staff members, and tutors. It was truly inspiring to witness the energy and joy within the centre.

“It was a rich learning experience,” noted Noluthando Sithole. “Coming from a communication background, it was fascinating to see how strategy, equity, and education come together in an international setting. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the work AIMS does across Africa.”

Celebrating Legacy and Impact: The Alumni Gala Dinner

The final evening of the meeting was marked by a joyful and heartfelt Alumni Engagement Gala Dinner hosted by AIMS Ghana at the Labadi Hotel in Accra. Alumni from various cohorts now working in diverse fields within Ghana gathered to reconnect, share stories, and celebrate the lasting impact of the AIMS experience.

The evening featured speeches from AIMS Ghana and AIMS Network presidents, as well as testimonials from alumni who spoke about how their time at AIMS shaped their careers and opened doors to new opportunities. Their stories highlighted not only personal growth but also the ripple effect of AIMS’ mission in building Africa’s scientific capacity.

“The gala was a beautiful reminder of what AIMS stands for,” said Noluthando. “It was inspiring to see how deeply connected the alumni remain to the organization and how many are giving back to their communities.”
