MISG 2025

The Mathematics in Industry Study Group (MISG) was held from 20 to 24 January 2025 at the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, University of the Witwatersrand. At this five-day workshop academic researchers and graduate students work collaboratively with representatives from industry on research problems submitted by local industry. Study Groups have been organized for over fifty years in many countries around the world. The first Study Group in South Africa was held in 2004.

The school was preceded by a Graduate Modelling Camp from 15 to 18 January 2025. The objective of the camp is to provide graduate students with additional hands-on experience at mathematical modelling and solving problems of industrial origin.

Five AIMS Mathematical Master’s students attended the event. Reflecting on the experience, Ms Anjoreoluwa Elizabeth Boluwajoko shared, “The MISG experience was one of the most insightful I’ve had since arriving at AIMS. I learned to apply my knowledge of Python and statistics to Machine Learning, working on challenging problems to solve industrial issues—something I had never done before. I was impressed by how I could leverage my prior knowledge while collaborating with some of the most talented mathematicians. My key takeaway was the immense learning experience; I gained so much in just ten days. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and extend a big thank you to everyone involved in organising this.”
