On 31 August 2024, something extraordinary happened at AIMS South Africa. The young women of Lavender Hill Secondary School held the hands of girls from Levana Primary School, not just as learners of mathematics but as leaders, creators, and dreamers.
They not only taught each other algorithms to design African Art but shared teachings of life itself, rooted in the belief that mathematical thinking can be a pathway to a brighter future—thoughts unimaginable when your surroundings do not mirror similar aspirations.
With the deepest gratitude, we understood that we did more than share knowledge; we shared our hearts. We ate meals together, passed down wisdom to our younger selves, and took the time to quiet our survival minds and honour our bodies and the challenging journeys we’ve walked (often alone). In a world that overlooks a girl/woman’s potential, we pause to recognise our worth and honour those we’ve lost.
This isn’t just about computer education; it’s about transformation. It’s about turning townships into towns and reshaping communities with creativity, hope, and an unshakeable belief in dreams. The girls and women are a testament to the strength of sisterhood and the unbreakable spirit of African youth. Let’s celebrate this generation of girls and women who are not just imagining a future but building it.
