AIMS Contribution to Waste Management and Recycling facilitating a dialogue in the Greater Muizenberg Community

One of AIMS’s goals is to benefit the broader society. Thus, community engagement is integral to its mission and vision. On 1 August AIMS South Africa hosted the launch of Talking Rubbish-The Muizenberg Recycling Collective event. The event aimed to have a conversation on waste management and recycling, informal recyclers and solutions to improve recycling practices in our communities. The event premiered the first chapter of the conversation, focusing on “The Informal Waste Picking Community”.

The event was organised by AIMS South Africa (host) in partnership with Amava Oluntu, Back to Work Campaign, Moving Spirit Productions, Muizenberg Improvement District and Xchange Connection. It was attended by 75 greater Muizenberg community members, including a group of waste-pickers who were in the film. Simon Roberts, MID Chairperson, also presented an interactive community map of Muizenberg – a quick guide to all that’s going on in the area.

“Thank you very much for enabling a very important meeting and conversation through the video screening, Talking Rubbish about the waste industry, and the broader Greater Muizenberg community. It demonstrates your commitment to community building and AIMS’s outreach vision. It is well appreciated. In my time in and around the event, I got to know much more about AIMS and your work….I hope this event brings us closer together and look forward to more collaborations.” said Paul Weinberg, on behalf of the Talking Rubbish team.
